Double deep racking is a high-density pallet storage system designed to increase storage capacity by positioning pallets two-deep on each side of an aisle.
By reducing the number of aisles required, this system significantly improves space utilization while maintaining relatively fast access to inventory.
Double deep racking is well suited for warehouses handling large pallet quantities per SKU and seeking a balance between storage density and accessibility.
Why Double Deep Racking is Suitable for You
01
Higher Storage Density
By storing pallets two-deep, you can significantly increase pallet positions compared to selective racking.
02
Ideal for Low-SKU, High-Volume Inventory
The system is well suited for operations with large quantities per SKU, where multiple pallets of the same product are stored together.
03
Reduced Aisle Requirements
Fewer aisles are needed compared to selective racking, helping you maximize usable storage space within the same warehouse footprint.
04
Compatible with Standard Handling Equipment
The system works seamlessly with common forklift types, making it easy to integrate into your existing warehouse operations.
How Does Double Deep Racking Work?
Double deep racking is a pallet storage system where pallets are stored two positions deep on each rack bay, requiring forklifts with extended reach capabilities to access the rear pallet.
Pallets are placed and retrieved from aisles sized according to the reach truck specifications. The system height, bay depth, and beam levels are determined based on pallet dimensions, load weights, handling equipment, and available building height.
This configuration allows warehouses to achieve higher storage density while still maintaining controlled and efficient pallet handling.
System Structure
Double deep racking is built using a robust modular structure, including:
- Frames – vertical uprights supporting the racking structure
- Beams – horizontal supports designed for two-deep pallet storage
Optional safety and support features include:
- Pallet support bars and safety beams
- Pallet backstops
- Frame and upright protectors
- Strut guards and end-of-aisle protection
- Load signage and rack labeling
These features help ensure safe operation and protect both the racking system and handling equipment.
