Vertical Lift Module (VLM)

Automated vertical storage with trays for high-SKU small to medium items

A Vertical Lift Module (VLM) is an automated vertical storage system designed to store and retrieve small to medium-sized items using trays that move automatically within an enclosed structure.

By utilizing building height and eliminating manual searching, VLMs dramatically increase storage density, picking accuracy, and operator productivity. This solution is ideal for warehouses, spare parts storage, MRO rooms, production support areas, and distribution centers handling high SKU counts with frequent picking activity.

Why Vertical Lift Module (VLM) is Suitable for You

01
Maximize Vertical Space Utilization

VLMs use the full height of your facility, significantly increasing storage capacity while minimizing floor space usage.

02
Ideal for High-SKU, Small to Medium Items

Designed for environments with many SKUs and frequent access needs, where organization and accuracy are critical.

03
Faster and More Accurate Picking

Automated tray delivery brings items directly to the operator, reducing search time and minimizing picking errors.

04
Improved Ergonomics and Operator Safety

Automated vertical storage with trays for high-SKU small to medium items.

How Does Vertical Lift Module (VLM) Work?

A Vertical Lift Module consists of two columns of trays stored vertically inside an enclosed unit, with an extractor mechanism that automatically retrieves the required tray.

When an item is requested, the system calculates the optimal tray location and delivers it to an access opening at the operator station. Items are picked or replenished, and the tray is returned automatically to its storage position.

Tray height is dynamically managed based on item dimensions, ensuring optimal space utilization. The system can be configured to support different picking strategies, access controls, and integration with WMS or ERP systems.

This operation enables high-density storage, fast access, and consistent accuracy with minimal manual handling.

System Structure

Vertical Lift Modules are built from integrated mechanical and software components, including:

  • Vertical enclosure – housing trays and protecting stored items
  • Storage trays – configurable for different item sizes and weights
  • Extractor system – automatically retrieves and stores trays
  • Operator access opening – ergonomic interface for picking and replenishment
  • Control software – managing storage logic, tray movement, and user access

Optional features and enhancements include:

  • Pick-to-light or laser pointer systems
  • Access control by user or role
  • Integration with WMS or ERP systems
  • Fire protection and safety systems
  • Multi-user access or dual tray delivery configurations
