Vertical Carousel Module (VCM)

Rotating vertical shelves for compact, high-frequency access storage

A Vertical Carousel Module (VCM) is an automated storage system that uses vertically rotating shelves to bring items directly to the operator.

Designed for fast access and compact storage, VCMs are ideal for small to medium-sized items that require frequent picking. By storing goods vertically and automating retrieval, VCMs help reduce floor space usage, improve picking speed, and enhance inventory organization.

Why Vertical Carousel Module (VCM) is Suitable for You

01
Fast Access for Frequently Picked Items

Rotating shelves deliver items quickly to the operator, making VCMs ideal for high-frequency picking environments.

02
Compact Storage Footprint

Vertical design maximizes storage capacity while occupying minimal floor space, especially in low- to mid-height facilities.

03
Simple and Reliable Automation

With fewer moving components compared to other automated systems, VCMs offer reliable operation with straightforward maintenance.

04
Improved Picking Ergonomics

Items are presented at a comfortable working height, reducing operator movement and physical strain.

How Does Vertical Carousel Module (VCM) Work?

A Vertical Carousel Module consists of a series of carriers or shelves arranged vertically in a closed loop inside an enclosed structure.

When an item is requested, the carousel rotates in the shortest direction to bring the required shelf to the access opening. Operators pick or replenish items at an ergonomic workstation, after which the carousel continues rotating as needed.

Shelf configuration, load capacity, and rotation speed are designed based on item dimensions, picking frequency, and operational requirements. The system can operate as a standalone unit or be integrated with WMS or ERP systems for controlled inventory management.

This setup enables fast access, compact storage, and consistent picking performance.

System Structure

Vertical Carousel Modules typically include:

  • Vertical enclosure – housing the rotating carousel
  • Shelves or carriers – configurable for different item sizes and weights
  • Drive and rotation mechanism – controlling shelf movement
  • Operator access opening – ergonomic picking interface
  • Control system – managing rotation logic and access control

Optional features and enhancements include:

  • Pick-to-light or laser pointer assistance
  • User access control and authorization
  • Integration with WMS or ERP systems
  • Safety sensors and emergency stop features
  • Multiple access openings for higher throughput
