Automated Storage & Retrieval System (ASRS)

Automate pallet or case handling with robotic cranes or shuttle systems

An Automated Storage & Retrieval System (AS/RS) is a high-performance automation solution designed to automatically store and retrieve pallets, cases, totes, or cartons using robotic cranes or shuttle technology.

AS/RS replaces manual handling with system-controlled movements, delivering high storage density, fast throughput, and consistent accuracy. This solution is ideal for warehouses and distribution centers handling large volumes, limited space, or operations where speed, precision, and scalability are critical.

Why Automated Storage & Retrieval System (ASRS) is Suitable for You

01
Automate High-Volume Storage and Retrieval

AS/RS handles repetitive storage and retrieval tasks automatically, reducing dependency on manual labor and forklifts.

02
Maximize Storage Density and Space Utilization

Vertical and deep-lane configurations allow you to store more goods within the same footprint or building height.

03
High Throughput with Consistent Accuracy

Robotic cranes and shuttles operate with system precision, ensuring fast and error-free handling of pallets or cases.

04
Scalable Platform for Long-Term Growth

AS/RS systems can be expanded in capacity, throughput, or automation level as business volumes and complexity increase.

How Does Automated Storage & Retrieval System (ASRS) Work?

An AS/RS uses automated cranes or shuttle systems to move goods between storage locations and input/output points under system control.

For pallet AS/RS, stacker cranes travel vertically and horizontally within aisles to store and retrieve pallet loads.

For case or tote AS/RS, shuttles or mini-load cranes handle smaller units at high speed.

Tasks are triggered by the WMS or warehouse control system, which directs storage locations, retrieval sequences, and prioritization. Goods are then transferred to conveyors, picking stations, or staging areas for downstream processes.

System design—including aisle layout, storage depth, crane or shuttle type, and throughput—is tailored to inventory profile, order patterns, and operational requirements.

This approach delivers high-density, high-speed, and fully controlled warehouse operations.

System Structure

AS/RS solutions typically include:

  • Storage structure – high-bay racking or shelving
  • Robotic cranes or shuttle systems – for automated movement
  • Input/output stations – load and discharge points
  • Conveyor or transfer systems – connecting AS/RS to operations
  • Control software (WCS/WMS) – managing movements, priorities, and logic

Optional features and enhancements include:

  • Multiple cranes or shuttles for higher throughput
  • Integration with Goods-to-Person workstations
  • Redundant systems for uptime reliability
  • Energy-efficient drives and safety systems
  • Full integration with ERP and planning systems
