A Vertical Buffer Module (VBM) is an automated storage and retrieval system designed for very fast picking of bins or trays using a lightweight mini-load crane.
The system stores items vertically in a compact buffer and retrieves bins or trays at high speed, making it ideal for operations with high order volumes, short lead times, and frequent order sequencing requirements. VBMs are commonly used in e-commerce fulfillment, distribution centers, and production logistics where speed and accuracy are critical.
Why Vertical Buffer Module (VBM) is Suitable for You
01
High-Speed Picking and Order Fulfillment
Lightweight mini-load cranes retrieve bins or trays rapidly, enabling high throughput and fast order processing.
02
Optimized for Bins and Small to Medium Items
Designed specifically for totes, bins, or trays, making it ideal for small parts, accessories, and e-commerce items.
03
Compact Vertical Storage with High Throughput
The vertical design maximizes storage density while maintaining very fast access times.
04
Scalable Automation Platform
System capacity and performance can be scaled by adding storage locations, cranes, or workstations as volumes grow.
How Does Vertical Buffer Module (VBM) Work?
A Vertical Buffer Module stores bins or trays in a vertical rack structure serviced by a lightweight mini-load crane.
When an order is released, the crane retrieves the required bin or tray and delivers it to a pick or buffer station. Items can be picked directly, sequenced for downstream processes, or transferred to conveyors, packing stations, or sortation systems.
System layout, crane speed, bin size, and workstation configuration are designed based on order profiles, throughput targets, and integration requirements with WMS or order management systems.
This approach enables very fast, accurate, and controlled picking with minimal manual handling.
System Structure
Vertical Buffer Modules typically consist of:
- Vertical storage structure – holding bins or trays
- Mini-load crane – lightweight, high-speed retrieval mechanism
- Bins or trays – standardized containers for items
- Pick or buffer stations – operator or automated interfaces
- Control software – managing storage logic, sequencing, and prioritization
Optional features and enhancements include:
- Multiple cranes for higher throughput
- Conveyor integration for inbound and outbound flow
- Goods-to-person picking stations
- Integration with WMS, WCS, or ERP systems
- Order sequencing and buffering logic
